Lyme disease, triggered by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is transmitted to horses, dogs, and humans through bites from the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis). This condition is often described as a syndrome due to its array of nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, behavioral shifts, widespread pain, joint inflammation and swelling, and cardiovascular issues, which collectively point to Lyme disease as a potential diagnosis. Early signs may be subtle, and tick bites can go unnoticed on your pet.

In horses, initial symptoms include discomfort and hypersensitivity in the major muscle groups of the back and limbs, as well as swelling in several joints, leading to increased lethargy. Over time, affected horses may show a reluctance to engage in riding or grooming activities, a departure from their usual behavior. Dogs might exhibit intermittent lameness that can shift from one limb to another, along with mild fever and reduced appetite.

For acute Lyme disease, characterized by symptoms such as a red tongue, rapid pulse, fever, and hot, swollen joints, we recommend the Jade Screen Eight formula (in our store as well). This is a blend of three traditional formulas—Yin Qiao San, Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San, and Yu Ping Feng San—used historically in China to manage acute febrile diseases, including during the SARS epidemic in 2002. This treatment typically lasts between 30 to 60 days to regulate the immune system and combat the infection.

During the chronic stages, when addressing persistent pain and bolstering the immune system, our Concentrated Lyme Formula is advised. This preparation combines Du Hou Ji Sheng Tang (Angelica and Loranthus Powder) with Yu Ping Feng San, renowned for its efficacy in treating arthritis-like symptoms in both humans and animals. This formula is especially beneficial for chronic, Wind-Cold-Damp arthritis, and generalized body pain that worsens in cold conditions.

If you suspect that your dog or horse might be suffering from Lyme disease, it is crucial to consult your veterinarian for a thorough examination and guidance. Self-diagnosing and initiating treatment without professional advice is not recommended.
